Seven Questions to Ask After Your Child’s English Trial Lesson
Ask useful questions after an English trial: what your child did independently, the next learning goal, teacher fit, connection quality and a practical lesson plan.
Quick answer: Go beyond “What level is my child?” Ask for examples of what they did independently, where they needed support and a small goal for the next lessons. Assess technical quality separately from teacher fit.

Put this guide into practice
- Note one strength and one support need.
- Ask for a small starting goal.
- Describe technical issues separately from teacher feedback.
- Check suitable times before choosing a package.
What can one trial tell you?
A trial offers a first look at communication with a teacher and responses to selected tasks. One meeting cannot establish a definitive level, personality judgement or long-term outcome. Tiredness, hesitation and technical conditions may affect that day’s experience.
A concrete strength, support need and next step are more useful than a general statement that everything went well. Ask for examples from the actual lesson.
Start with three questions about learning
Keep questions short. Focus on how your child approached tasks rather than counting mistakes.
- 1. What did my child do without help? Did they follow an instruction or ask a question?
- 2. Where did they need support, and what helped: a picture, repetition or two choices?
- 3. What small goal would you suggest for the next few lessons? Can you give an example of language they could use?
Ask three more questions about the plan
A recommendation for more lessons should have a clear explanation. Ask how the proposed routine relates to your child’s needs and share your family’s actual timetable.
- 4. What lesson length and weekly frequency do you suggest, and why?
- 5. If we do one short activity at home, what should it be and where can we hear a correct model?
- 6. What observable change should we look for after several lessons: answering with less help, or using a familiar phrase with a new picture?
Question seven: What would continuing look like?
Ask “How will you support my child when they find something difficult, and how will you share feedback with us?” Also check whether the teacher’s available times fit your family. A good first meeting does not automatically solve timetable constraints.
Ask your child “What did you enjoy?”, “Was anything unclear?” or “Which game would you like to try again?” Listen without steering them towards a preferred answer about the teacher.
Separate teacher, lesson and connection quality
The teacher’s approach, the child’s experience of the activities and audio/video quality are different aspects of a lesson. Interruptions can leave an incomplete impression of language ability. Report a technical problem before drawing conclusions.
Include the date, time and a concrete description. “The sound kept cutting out, so we could not hear most questions” explains more than a low score alone. Ask support to review the situation and applicable terms rather than assuming an automatic replacement entitlement.
A short message you can adapt
“Hello, thank you for today’s trial. Could you share one thing our child managed independently, an area where they needed support and a first goal for the next few lessons? We would also like to understand your recommendation for lesson length and frequency.”
Use the response to compare options that fit your family. Stayeng’s free trial is 25 minutes, with no obligation to buy a package afterwards. If no assessment has been provided, ask the teacher or support instead of guessing a level or personalised plan.
Frequently asked questions
Was the trial unsuccessful if my child spoke very little?
Not necessarily. Look at the support offered, how your child responded to instructions and the technical conditions together.
Should we immediately choose a long package?
There is no requirement to do so. First clarify teacher fit, usable times and a sustainable routine.
What should I report if the connection failed?
Include the lesson date and time and describe the audio, camera or joining issue. Ask support to review what happened and the applicable conditions.
